Game Review: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Mario. That plucky little plumber that we all know and love. He has been the mustachioed face of Nintendo for literal decades, and like other celebrities, sometimes he gets a little cosmetic work done.

His latest facelift came out this year with a re-release of Paper Mario: the Thousand-Year Door for the Nintendo Switch. The original game took the world by storm 20 years ago. At the time, critics applauded the original gameplay often citing this as the best title in the Paper Mario series of games.

Now a whole new generation of gamers (YOU) get to experience this game for yourselves. In case you don't know, Paper Mario lets you explore worlds that are designed to look like they're made out of paper. Even going so far as to allow Mario himself to fold into different shapes like a paper airplane or boat in order to clear different obstacles. Combat follows a turn-based system, similar to other role-playing games. Thousand Year Door incorporates an audience that can hurt or help Mario and his partners, which keeps the battle scenes from being too repetitive.

Overall, I find the Paper Mario titles to be fun and charming games. I find the early battles a little slow but luckily, they don't last too long. I'm so glad that I can play on my Switch now instead of doing real world things like laundry. Check out this game and more from the AV section at the Library!
