DB Cooper

If you know, you know. (And if you don't, you're about to find out!)

On November 24, 1971, a nondescript man (literally how the FBI describes him) went down in history. This man bought a ticket for a one-way flight to Seattle, Washington in the Portland, Oregon airport under the name of Dan Cooper. During the course of the flight, he ordered a drink & around 3 PM, he handed the stewardess a note saying that he had something nefarious in his briefcase & that he wanted her to sit beside him, which she did. Cooper then gave her a note to take to the pilots in the cockpit - a demand for four parachutes & $200,000, all in 20-dollar bills. He was able to exchange the other passengers on the flight for his demands & had the flight rerouted to Mexico.

If the story isn't crazy enough for you, it gets crazier: Cooper jumped out of the back of the plane & the ransom money. The plane landed safely elsewhere but DB Cooper disappeared in the meantime. To this day, nobody has been charged with this plane-jacking. The FBI was on the case immediately & this remains an open case. (There is actually an article about it on the FBI's website: D.B. Cooper Hijacking — FBI) Clues have been found, theories have been put forth, suspects looked into. But the case has gone down in legend & somewhere along the way, the name Dan Cooper morphed into DB Cooper.

Books have been written about this (& the library has a few). The story of DB Cooper has been shared on the History Channel shows History's Greatest Mysteries & Brad Meltzer's Decoded. Of course, there are a whole mess of YouTube videos & articles about the DB Cooper case. (A few are listed below.)

And since DB Cooper perpetrated his plane-jacking the evening before Thanksgiving, the Quincy Public Library will have a display featuring materials about DB Cooper, plane-jacking, & hijacking during the week of Thanksgiving. Just a little something different - both for the library & for those of us trying to escape the holiday related stress. Feel free to borrow any of those. If you don't find what you want, we can always place a hold for you. (But please bring your library card to obtain the materials. No one wants to join DB Cooper on any of those lists. 😒)
