Program Description

Event Details

Prior to and during the Civil Rights Era, African Americans struggled against an oppressive society that denied them basic human rights- even the rights to an adequate education. Freedom Schools arose to fight this oppression by providing the education children were denied by providing it on porches and kitchens across America.

A fascinating segment of American History and the history of the struggle for Civil Rights that you won’t find in the history books, come join us at Quincy Public Library to learn not only how Freedom Schools came to be- but how they continue to be relevant today. When the presentation is complete, feel free to stay and browse the photo gallery from Freedom Summer and beyond. History and present-day merge in this program as we learn how to be educated agents for the American ideal of democracy and social change.
